I enjoy being an adult. Sure at times I would rather stay in bed or play hooky to visit the beach. However there is something to be said about living in a city you love, working in a career that makes your soul happy, and being able to plan for adventures when you have PTO. 


I did not wake up one morning and instantly have all of those things. It took a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and time. 

How:

I made a list 8 years ago of the way I wanted my life to feel. Not specifically what I would be doing or where I would be living but the way I would feel in my ideal life. Then I took positive steps every chance I got until my life began to feel as I had written it in my list. 


When mistakes were made lessons were learned. Each lesson brought me closer to the goal [current status: still making mistakes, still learning]. Insert Maslow's hierarchy of needs. According to Maslow a person must achieve the basic needs of life such as food, warmth, water, and sleep before being able to focus on safety and a place to reside. See image below. 


My view on this theory is a little different. I believe that once you reach the top of the pyramid you begin again. Almost like leveling up in a video game. For example: when Mr. Winter and I first met we had less than five dollars between us. Our first goal was food, water, cigarettes, and having a warm place to sleep. I feel that we worked through our first pyramid once we were married. After our wedding we started again, we cared a little more about what we ate, whether or not the water tasted clean, and began searching for a place to live that was a step up from our previous home. I  can think of at least six times that we've leveled up. It's easy to look through the last nine years of my life and see times where we became self actualized and started again with increasing the quality of the base of the pyramid. In 2012 for example, we switched from cigarettes to electronic vapor. Yes, it is still a habit and we still consume nicotine, but we are no longer tied to the 2000 other harmful ingredients of cigarettes. We now eat well for our physical needs; organic food prepared at home 99.9% of the time. We pay more attention to the needs of our bodies - seeking holistic health options whenever possible. 

Money has not been a factor to the progression of our levels until after graduation. We would sacrifice things others felt were vital, like trips to the salon in exchange for YouTube inspired home haircuts, so we could afford higher quality food and apartments.


Once we graduated we were able to research and decide on the city we truly wanted to settle down in. A place with a culture we would fit in with instead of trying to force circular personalities into square cultures as we had been doing our entire lives. We knew our earning potential was greater and were able to, once again, level up our quality of life. 

The ultimate goal for us, the feeling that we are seeking to achieve in our lives, is happiness, security, exploration, and knowledge. I feel making good choices coupled with resilience allows any adult to continue leveling up. Again adulting to me is not equal to how much money you earn but how you live. 

I believe that I am the type of adult that my child self would look up to. I will continue to work on leveling up. Creating new goals and ultimately striving for a life that harmoniously matches my desired feelings list.

New San Diego Apartment #1

Recently we moved into the nicest apartment I've ever lived in. This apartment felt so luxurious... until we moved our old furniture into it. I have many ideas about how we should decorate but very little room in the budget to make it happen.



Never fear though,  Mr. Winter and I have lived on much tighter budgets the whole time we've been together. With good planning, the right timing, and some elbow grease we should have our new apartment in tip top shape soon.

The first part of my decor planning process always starts with my virtual vision board.
There are a few pieces we plan to purchase new from IKEA. The Billy bookcases with glass doors will house our books and favorite items we want to keep from the cats. The bookcases will take up an entire wall of our dining/ library area.



We have been back and forth on ideas for the living room where seating is concerned. We have landed on a large sectional. We are a gaming couple so having two televisions and a monitor in one room is a must. Organizing the screens is tricky because we don't want our space to seem like the electronics display section at a department store.



Our apartment is a long - open concept space. Because of this all decor should match. We have an eclectic style which includes gold frames, globes, and items which inspire happy thoughts of world travel.



We are excited to create a space that we enjoy entertaining and living in. Once we have everything in place I will definitely share photos!

Weight loss #1

One year ago today I began my journey on the Ketogenic diet. Yes, there have been ups and downs but overall I am still impressed with how well my body responds to this diet.


In future posts I will go into detail about how I was diagnosed with PCOS and the medical history that led to my rapid weight gain along with my inability to lose the weight. However in this post I wanted to take a moment to share my first public weight loss photo.

In the last year I have lost eighty eight pounds. That is about the same as two forty pound bags of potatoes and a ten pound bag of sugar.

Before I weighed around 450 pounds.


I  am currently 362.

My goal is to lose two hundred pounds or five forty pound bags of potatoes. At that point I'll decide whether I want to lose the last bit of weight or stay slightly chubby. You may not know this but I am six feet tall and I have always been plus size. I am more comfortable as a curvy woman.

The main guiding factor will be my health.

I am looking forward to seeing my progress at the end of my second year of keto life!


App Review: Affirmations

I enjoy apps that enhance the quality of my life. I am not much of a phone gamer, and I use a physical planner for things like budget, appointments, grocery lists, etc. It is really nice to have stumbled upon an app that helps in a subconscious way.

My Affirmations is a super simple app that runs in the background. I have it set to change affirmations every three hours. So now, every time I look at my notifications on my phone or I'm flipping through the home screen I see a positive affirmation.

Another cool feature of the app is that you can decide which types of affirmations you would like to see.
For example:

  • financial
  • health
  • mindset
  • relationship
  • career
  • custom

The app acts as a constant reminder to think positive. One of my motto's is: 
What you think about you bring about. 
This app helps me to stay positive, even on days when I don't want to be.

Deodorant Recipe #2 (stick version)

Why would you need to make your own deodorant when you can easily purchase it at the store when you buy your weekly groceries? Deodorant is a product we use everyday and a staple in most peoples homes... this staple contains ingredients that have been connected to breast cancer and Alzheimers...


This recipe is straight from the pages of my book: ApotheKayla Year One and I have decided to share it with you here because it is such an awesome recipe and one that I know you all will love!

Lurking in the ingredient list of the average deodorant are harmful substances such as aluminum, parabens, propylene glycol, phthalates, & triclosan. Read more about why I quit using regular deodorant on my scoop-able deodorant recipe by clicking here.

On to the good stuff!! The recipe:

Ingredients:
I made three batches at one time (note the three Tablespoons of beeswax).

 -1 Tablespoon beeswax
 -2 Tablespoons Shea butter
 -2 Tablespoons coconut oil
 -2 Table spoons baking soda
 -2 teaspoons vitamin E oil
 -10 drops of essential oils

Directions:

1.On a double boiler or small crockpot melt down beeswax, shea butter, and coconut oil. Stirring occasionally.
2.Remove from heat and stir in baking soda a little at a time, then add essential oils, and vitamin E oil.
3.Place into the container of your choice (I found mine at a thrift store and they are actually reuseable twist up push-pop containers, but you can also order deodorant containers online), let cool, and enjoy!

Notes:
You may choose any essential oils you prefer. Lime is a natural odor eliminator, or wild orange would smell nice.
