Welcome to the Detoxify your home Challenge!

Whether or not we realize it our cleaning products are releasing toxins into the air we breath in our homes. If you have not seen the documentary Chemerical, I highly suggest it! Click here to watch it for free! This challenge is inspired by the film Chemerical, although the recipes will be slightly different.

The first part of this challenge is simple, gather supplies!

You will need:
-Empty spray bottles, different sizes.
-Vinegar (either white or acv).
-Baking Soda
-Rubbing Alcohol
-Hydrogen Peroxide
-Essential Oils (these are not necessary)

The second part isn’t really difficult, but it may seem like a daunting task at first…

You need to place all of your cleaning products in a trash bag and either throw them away or store them in a well ventilated area; the garage, or your shed for example.

If you decide to throw them away, please do so properly. In case you didn’t know already, these cleaning products contain hazardous materials and should not be thrown into the landfill with your regular household trash. Look up your local waste management center and call them before you throw your products away.

If you decided to store them, and you find that you do not like the way the natural products clean you can bring them back into your home. I seriously doubt you will have any trouble getting used to the all natural recipes but if you are skeptical then you should store your toxic products.

Now on to the fun part; Step three, finding recipes!

Throughout this challenge, during the month of January, I will be posting a few cleaning supply recipes each week! This week I want to focus on the recipes that call for vinegar.

All Purpose Cleaner: One part Vinegar, One part water, essential oils for scent. (I used lavender and lemongrass) Mix these ingredients into an empty spray bottle and label.

You can print out this label and tape it onto your bottle if you do not have blank label sheets.
Whether or not you use this label you will want to at least write the ingredients or purpose of the cleaner on the bottle!
When I say all purpose, I mean all purpose! I use this recipe for glass, countertops, appliances (inside and out), and on furniture. When I use it to clean furniture I spray the mixture on the towel and then wipe down the furniture. I have been using this recipe for months now and I love it!

Another great way to use this recipe is for a quick mop. This is not the type of mopping I would recommend on a regular basis; but if you spill something and company is coming over in 20 minutes you can wipe up the mess, then spray this on the floor, and wipe away to keep it from getting sticky. I have been known to spill coffee when I’m rushing, and sometimes I don’t realize it until I’m leaving the house. I don’t want the coffee spill to stain my floor but I don’t have time to stop and mop the entire floor, this recipe comes in handy during these situations!
You can use vinegar to mop your floors! My friend who writes at How we flourish says:
"For floors, you want only 1/2 c vinegar for every gallon water"

check out her article about cleaning with vinegar here.

I’m not perfect by any means. This challenge is going to be a challenge for me as well! You all know that I started my toxic free journey about a year ago so I’m still taking baby steps towards ‘clean living’. I have some cleaning products that I need to dispose of as well…

One of those being a toxic floor cleaning solution. I will be testing out the recipe from How We Flourish along with a few new recipes that I have found, and I will report back next week on the results!

Join me next week for the second phase of the challenge; when I will go over the power of baking soda in homemade cleaning products! Until then, try these recipes out and look up some of your own. Use the comment section below to list any recipes you have found (with the link to the original article).

I hope you have an awesome New Year! -Kayla
