6 all natural oral health alternatives

Monday, March 12, 2018

Over the years I have brought you many posts on all natural dental hygiene. I thought it would be neat to do a roundup of my favorite pearly white recipes, and remedies.

1. Remineralizing toothpaste. This recipe includes ingredients that actually help improve your teeth and gums. If you do not like the flavor of peppermint try wild orange essential oil instead!

2. Hemp Paste. This toothpaste recipe is more smooth than the remineralizing recipe. However, the hemp which contains many healthy fats is great for nourishing your gums. Again, with this recipe you can add in wild orange if you dislike the flavor of peppermint.

3. Oil Pulling: This is an age-old Ayurvedic technique. For this you will need either coconut oil or hemp oil. Other people have had success with Avacado oil or even olive oil. I personally find the taste of all oils a little displeasing other than the hemp and coconut oils. Put a tablespoon of this oil in your mouth and swish it back and forth for as long as you can manage. The recommended amount of time is at least 10-15 minutes. If you can do 20 you are a pro! Make sure to spit the oil out when you are done. The oil will absorb the toxins and bacteria in your mouth as you swish. Do not swallow.

4. Activated charcoal for whitening: This is not the same thing that you use on your grill. It is carbon that has been activated to increase its adsorption.

Adsorption, to explain simply, is the process of one substance attracting/ catching another substance (in this case a toxin) to remove it from a given surface. When you apply activated charcoal to your teeth and let it sit for a few minutes you will see a huge difference in the color of your teeth. Follow the link to learn the process and see my results.

Cloves. Use clove oil to numb extreme tooth pain until you can make it to the dentist.

5. Clove oil: Having extreme tooth pain and have to wait to get to the dentist? Apply a drop of clove oil to your tooth/surrounding gum and the clove will numb your tooth. Clove is also really beneficial for overall oral health. WARNING: the clove oil that is for sale at the pharmacy has a huge label that says: Not for internal use. Please follow this guideline. If you would like a clove oil that is safe for internal use send me an email.

Peppermint oil is perfect for oral health and great breath!

6. Peppermint oil: Not only will peppermint make your breath smell fabulous it is also packed with benefits for oral health. Based on preliminary studies peppermint has helped to reverse tooth and gum disorders/decay. It is also a great preventative to use daily.

While this is not the complete list of herbal oral health it is a great place to start. Which herbal remedies do you use for oral health? Let me know in the comments below.

I hope this was helpful! Thank you for reading and until next time - Be well!

What to pack in your toiletries bag for a vacation.

Monday, June 23, 2014

This may be a very random post, but it is one that I wish I had read before we went to the beach last summer. I have several essential oils and home made toiletries but which ones are important enough to carry with me to the beach for family vacation and which ones would be useful in an emergency situation?

You never know which oil you will need but if you know your families health well enough you can plan ahead and pack for things that you, your husband, or your kids experience often (such as heartburn, nausea, sunburn, headaches, etc). Each family will be different because we all have different needs.

This is the list I made:

Single Oils: Eucalyptus Oil, Wintergreen Oil, & Peppermint Oil (email me to find out where I buy my oils).

Oil Blends: Stomach Soother (Includes Peppermint, Lemon, and Rosemary) which works wonders for nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, constipation, acid reflux, and helps my husband if he has a gallstone attack (literally stops the attack from happening).

I also carry: Healing Salve, Dandy Oil, Hemp lippie, and mineral makeup(for a light sunscreen on my face and because I love it)!

I carry the basics as well; homemade fluoride-free toothpaste, deodorant, hairspray, perfume, & soap (recipe coming soon).

Believe it or not all of these items fit in a very small space. I want to continue making conscious choices while we travel as well as at home. Last summer I forgot to bring any oils and we had to leave the family trip early to come home to get my oils... not fun.

I could also condense these items down into travel sized containers, but for the most part I make small batches of everything to ensure it doesn't spoil (no problems with that so far).

I guess I should quit blogging and start packing, I may not have internet access so if I'm quiet for a few days you know why!

Thanks for reading, remember.. "Sharing is Caring"!

Hemp Paste

Friday, March 28, 2014

I got an e-mail from my publisher today stating that my Authors copy was officially ready for print. Once I receive it and sign off on it saying that it is perfect my book will be ready for official printing!

So.. with the anticipation of the release of my book I wanted to share one of the recipes in it with you!

I've been using the Re-mineralizing toothpaste recipe for some time, and I can truly say that it works. Small cracks/ cavities in mine and my husbands teeth have literally vanished.

However, this recipe does taste a little bitter and because I love Hemp Oil so much and the makeup of Hemp is ideal for perfect human health I decided to make, try out, and share my review of a toothpaste made with Hemp oil!

Hemp Paste is perfect for the kiddo's, because it does taste better and doesn't have the tingly sensation; my little brother chooses it over the Re-mineralizing toothpaste. He uses it everyday!

Ingredients:
  1.  ½ cup of Coconut Oil

  2.  1/8 cup of Hemp Oil

  3.   1 Tablespoon Baking Soda

  4.  15-20 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil

Directions:
  1.  Mash the baking soda into the coconut oil with a fork or whisk.

  2.  Stir in Hemp Oil & Peppermint Essential Oil

  3. Place in container with small spoon or BPA free plastic squeeze bottle.

Notes:

 ·         Around our house we refer to this toothpaste recipe as “Hemp-Paste,” & yes it will be green. However it will not stain your teeth at all.

·         The nutrients in hemp oil are perfect for balanced oral health. The blend of Omega 3, Omega 6, antioxidants, and fatty acids are wonderful for healing damaged teeth and allowing them to naturally heal. Hemp is also anti-microbial and anti-bacterial.

·         Peppermint oil is also a wonderful ingredient for overall oral hygiene. Peppermint oil kills bacteria, helps to reduce plaque, and keeps your breath smelling minty fresh. If you are not a fan of peppermint toothpaste you can replace this ingredient with sweet orange essential oil or another oil of your choosing.

·         Baking soda is an excellent semi-abrasive ingredient which helps remove plaque and prevent gingivitis. If you prefer to leave the baking soda out, the option is yours. However, baking soda is also great for neutralizing your pH levels which is a huge benefit for your teeth and your overall health.

·         My teeth feel amazingly clean, as if I have just left the dentist’s office, and they feel so smooth and strong. They have gotten significantly whiter and brighter!

Look no farther than this awesome recipe!

Review & Final Notes:
I chose to make this toothpaste for a few reasons. In my opinion Dental Hygiene is its own reward, and being in control of your own dental hygiene is very fulfilling (the cleaning part of it and knowing what is in your products, otherwise I suggest contacting a professional you trust). When I discovered the harmful side effects of fluoride I choose to buy fluoride free toothpastes, to my dismay they were three to four dollars more than regular toothpaste so I found myself using it sparingly. The main reason I chose this recipe: I found through research that contrary to popular belief you can re-mineralize your teeth and strengthen them naturally.

As far as a review goes... I love it! I wake up looking forward to brushing my teeth and feel the effects all day. My teeth feel clean and strong, as if I just left the dental office, hours after I brush. My mother was skeptical about trying it but has since thrown out her usual toothpaste and my husband tells all of his friends about it. It really is worth your time to try this recipe for yourself.

It really helps to have a container with a small spoon to dip out the toothpaste,
look for sugar bowls in your local thrift stores.

-Calcium Magnesium Powder: "Calcium protects your teeth by keeping the jaw bone strong and sturdy all through your life, which in turn ensures tight fitting teeth where bacteria cannot thrive"(1). Expert Advice.. When buying your calcium if it is in the citrate family expect your toothpaste to have a fizzy sensation for a few weeks after you make it. I have grown to like the fizzing sensation however you may not. The longer the toothpaste sits the more the "fiz" will dissipate (each day it will weaken). To avoid this, when purchasing your calcium or calcium magnesium powder make sure it is not of the Citrate Variety.

-100% Therapeutic grade essential oils: I chose Peppermint for the taste and because "Peppermint is one of the most important ingredients in toothpaste, as it is effective in dental care. This is because, the purifying  properties of peppermint oil, fight bad breath and germs in the teeth and gums. Peppermint oil is also widely used to alleviate tooth discomfort"(2). If you do not like peppermint you can use any 100% therapeutic grade essential oil or a combination of them if you choose, for example: Cinnamon, Orange, Orange & Vanilla. The options are endless but I would make sure through research that the oils you choose are safe to take by mouth. Also, make sure you are not buying aromatic essential oils, these are not meant to come in contact with any part of your body. To make sure the oils you purchase are safe make sure they are 100% Therapeutic Grade Essential oils. There are many safe name brands you can choose from.
